What you need to know about sealants and wood floors. Recently there was a devastating fire in Somerville, which killed three wood flooring men and severely injured another. This fire also left a family homeless. This fire was due to the use of sealants. Companies who want to speed up the drying process of finishes so that a second coat of urethane can be applied on the same day use sealants. These companies can charge the consumer a smaller fee because the time it takes to complete the job is cut in half. This practice is widespread throughout the industry, and there are many accidents like this on a yearly basis. |

| The problem with sealants is that they are highly flammable. We here at Frank H. Duffy, Inc. do not use sealants. We provide quality work. We apply one coat of polyurethane at a time and allow adequate drying time for the optimal durability. We apply additional coats of urethane as needed on the second or third day giving ample dry time to produce the highest quality job possible. We here at Frank H. Duffy, Inc. do not use sealants. Some laminate pre-finished floors are costly to install and are 1/2” thick compared to the ¾” thickness of a solid hard wood floor. The laminates are difficult to patch and you can usually only get one sanding out of these floors. Solid pre-finished floors can stand many refinishing (7—9) throughout its life. However, these floors have a beveled edge, which becomes a dirt trap but diminishes through refinishings. The benefit of going with pre-finished floors is that there is no down time for the polyurethane to dry and cure. The job can be finished in a timely fashion without the fumes and time hassle. This may be an option for some with allergies or other health concerns. The quality of the pre-finished floors is not as high as an unfinished product in color, milling and lengths. But remember it is more economical to deal with the inconveniences of hardwood floor installation and refinishing. A hard wood floor can last many years with numerous refinishing. We only install solid ¾” pre-finished flooring of the highest quality, to give the customer longevity and beauty for years to come. The latest wood flooring trends Some of the popular flooring material includes: Oak, Maple, Walnut, Cherry, White pine, Antique Heart pine, Antique Chestnut, Ash, Birch. Other exotic woods include Santos Mahogany, Brazilian Cherry, African Sapele, and Teak. Wenge, Ebony, Blood wood, Purple Heart and others are used for feature or accent strips. Some other popular trends include using bleach, and a pickling process, with the use of water base polyurethane’s to achieve a white floor, or aniline water base dyes and oil base stains with oil base finishes to get a deep dark rich color enhancing the grain and natural texture of the wood. Other styles of installation include inlays, borders, and medallions, to formalize any room, or just to enhance the size, shape, and angles, that makes up the area. Medallions bring a focal point to any foyer, family room, kitchen, or game rooms.
